Pizza nights are epic, and they serve the best cinnamon rolls I have ever had! Situated between the float plane dock and the new Alaska Marine Highway Ferry Dock being built, and next door to the post office, where everyone must pick up their mail because there is no home delivery. Tenakee has around 50 year round residents and 150 seasonal residents. Tenakee is a walking and biking community where the only two trucks in town are the fuel truck and the fire truck. This community only offers home schooling because they need a minimum of 10 children who will attend the school to open the school. Right now there are 7. Tenakee has an active homeschooling community, fully supported by the regional school district. The public school could reopen in the future with enough enrollment. The beautiful school building is also dedicated for homeschool use and available for homeschoolers and their families, including two large classrooms with skylights, a science lab, library, and gymnasium. Tutoring and group activities available. The State of Alaska provides reimbursement for homeschool curriculum and materials, approximately $2,000 per student per year. The village store offers a mix of standard and gourmet foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, other essential items, and special orders, as well as beer, wine, and liquor. Soak your cares away in the therapeutic waters of Tenakee's hot springs. Situated on Chichagof Island, this is a community where life runs on island time. The fresh berries are plentiful and free for the taking as you walk down the dirt path that serves as Main Street. ATV’s, bicycles, and walking are the modes of transportation in town. And a boat is almost a must have to harvest the crab, salmon, halibut, shrimp and other bounties of the sea. Climates temperate enough to grow apples, cherries, cabbage, potatoes, kale, peas, beans, and more. The community greenhouse is heated with geothermal heat from the natural hot springs. Water comes from the well, a fresh water cold spring, and a stream fed system. Chichagof Island is 75 miles long and 50 miles wide. It is the 5th largest island in the United States. It boasts excellent deer and bear hunting areas. This community is a 70 mile float plane ride from Alaska’s Capital City of Juneau, and is accessible by boat or plane.
